Shepard is a cowboy playwright dramatist of America was gone forever.
Samuel
Shepard Rogers (November 5, 1943 – July
27, 2017), known professionally as Sam Shepard, was an American playwright,
actor, author, screenwriter, and director whose body of work spanned over half
a century.
Shepard
died on July 27, 2017 at his home in Kentucky, aged 73, from amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis.
American
cinema has lost an excellent actor, and a good director. He is a best
playwright and a Pulitzer Prize recipient. He was the one who connected the
movie world to the stage. At the same time, the fans who gave him a lovely
nickname were "cowboy poet".

He
was the author of forty-four plays as well as several books of short stories,
essays, and memoirs. Shepard received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1979 for
his play Buried Child. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting
Actor for his portrayal of pilot Chuck Yeager in The Right Stuff in 1983.
Shepard
received the PEN/Laura Pels International Foundation for Theater Award as
as
an American playwright in 2009. New York describes him as America's greatest
playwright.
Shepard's
plays are known for gloomy, poetic, surreal, black humor, and non-roots
characters living on the outskirts of American society.
His
50-year friendship with Johnny Dark (stepfather to O-Lan Jones) was the subject
of the documentary Shepard & Dark (2013) by Treva Wurmfeld. A collection of
Shepard and Dark's correspondence, Two Prospectors, was also published that
year.
At
the beginning of his playwriting career, Shepard did not direct his own plays.
His earliest plays were directed by a number of different directors but most
frequently by Ralph Cook, the founder of Theatre Genesis.
Shepard
decided that his vision of his plays required him to direct them on his own. He
directed many of his plays, but with a few rare exceptions, he did not direct
the plays of other playwright.
