John Sidney McCain III was born August 29, 1936. He is an American politician who currently serves as the senior United States Senator from Arizona, in that office since 1987. He was the Republican nominee in the 2008 presidential election.

McCain took part in the Presidential nomination race in 2000, but he lost a heated primary season contest to George W. Bush of Texas. He won the nomination in 2008 after returning from early reversals, but was defeated by Barack Obama in the general election, losing in the electoral margin of 365-173 and 53-46% In the popular vote.

He subsequently adopted more orthodox conservative stances and attitudes and largely opposed actions of the Obama administration, especially in regard to foreign policy matters.
By 2013, however, he had become a key figure in the Senate for negotiating deals on certain issues in an otherwise partisan environment. In 2015, McCain became chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
On July 14, 2017, McCain underwent a minimally invasive craniotomy at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix in order to remove a blood clot above his left eye. His absence prompted Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to delay a vote on the Better Care Reconciliation Act.

Five days later, Mayo Clinic doctors announced that the laboratory results from the surgery confirmed the presence of a glioblastoma, which is a very aggressive brain tumor.
Standard treatment options for this tumor include chemotherapy and radiation. McCain's doctors said that he had a good recovery from the surgery and his underlying health is excellent, which allowed him to return to his family home to rest.

On July 19, his Senate office made the statement that Senator McCain appreciates the overwhelming support he has received in the last few days. He is in good spirits when he is still He continues to live with his family in Arizona and is very grateful to the Mayo Clinic physicians and staff for their excellent care and confidence that any future treatment will be effective.
