Marleau scores twice in Maple Leafs debut .
Toronto beat Winnipeg Jets 7-2 on Wednesday night. This is
the opening match between the two strong teams.
Patrick Marleau scored twice in his Maple Leafs debut.
Patrick Denis Marleau was born on September 15, 1979. He is a Canadian
professional ice hockey forward for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National
Hockey League (NHL) on July 2. He previously played for the San Jose Sharks
from 1997 to 2017, and served as captain from 2004 to 2009. He spent the first
19 seasons of his career with the San Jose Sharks.
In a three-minute span in the first period, Nazem Kadri,
James van Riemsdyk and William Nylander scored for the Leafs (1-0-0). While
Frederik Andersen made 35 saves in net for Toronto.
It has been noted that Tyler Bozak, Matthews and Van
Riemsdyk had a pair of supporters and Marleau, Marner and Kadri all
contributed. Marner took advantage of his team's fourth power play to stretch
the lead 6-0 at 8:07.
Mark Scheifele ended Andersen's shutout bid midway through
the third period to make it 6-1, and Mathieu Perreault also scored for Winnipeg
(0-1-0).
New Jets veteran goalie Steve Mason was pulled after Marleau’s second
goal 36 seconds into the third period, having allowed five goals on 20 shots.
Winnipeg was dominating the opening period, , but it was
Toronto’s only power play of the period that paid off. Nylander used Toronto’s
10th shot of the game to make it 3-0 at 18:23. Matthews had two assists for a
three-point game.A Matthews goal 26 seconds later and Perreault’s at 12:57
rounded out the rout.
