In his NBA debut on 18 October 2017, Simmons had 18 points and 10 rebounds in a 120–115 season-opening loss to the Washington Wizards. Benjamin David Simmons is an American-Australian professional basketball player for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

A versatile forward from Melbourne, Simmons attended Box Hill Senior Secondary College before moving to the United States to attend Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida.
Simmons was selected with the number one overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft by the 76ers, becoming the third Melbourne-born number one overall pick (following Andrew Bogut and Kyrie Irving) in 11 years. He has represented the Australian national team.

On Wednesday, the Wizards used a right-wing player Otto Porter as their defender against Simmons when he was on the pitch with Robert Covington at No. 4.

On 3 July 2016, Simmons signed his rookie scale contract with the 76ers and joined the team for the 2016 NBA Summer League. While he shot the ball poorly during his first three Summer League games, Simmons was praised for his court awareness and passing ability for a big man.
He went on to be named in the All-Las Vegas Summer League First Team, and in six Summer League games, he averaged 10.8 points, 7.7 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game.

On 30 September 2016, Simmons rolled his right ankle during the 76ers' final training camp scrimmage. Simmons had suffered a fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone of his right foot, and was estimated to miss three to four months.

However, on 24 February 2017, he was ruled out for the entire 2016–17 season after tests revealed that his broken right foot had not fully healed. In April 2017, it was reported that Simmons had grown two inches since being drafted, to stand at just under 7'0".

In September 2017, Simmons declared himself 100 percent fit ahead of Philadelphia's training camp, with no restrictions placed on his workload despite having been out of action for a year.

However, doubts about his strength, fitness and scoring ability after a full season on the sideline, are highlighted by some experts who see him as an outsider for rookie of the year.
