How To Watch Geminids Meteor Shower 2017 in Australia - LP 313

Astronomy news.
How To Watch Geminids Meteor Shower 2017 in Australia.

In  Australia, scientists have reported that the Geminids are expected to produce the most impressive and, in particular, people will have the opportunity to witness the asteroid that created it.

The Geminids are a meteor shower caused by the object 3200 Phaethon, which is thought to be a Palladian asteroid with a "rock comet" orbit. This would make the Geminids, together with the Quadrantids, the only major meteor showers not originating from a comet.

In its erratic orbit, dust and debris enter and burst into the Earth's atmosphere, creating visible raindrops from the Earth. This view is particularly good from the Southern Hemisphere, which makes it the most popular event for the Australian community.

The Geminid satellite meteor shower is appearing every year in our sky, and all 41 meteors every hour if you are lucky enough to be in the Top End will be brighter than ever, thanks to the moon going up for the event.

Some notable information about The Geminids this year in Australia:

The best viewing position is are on the same latitude as Darwin followed by Brisbane/Perth. Sydney, Adelaide, Canberra and Melbourne should still receive around 22 meteors per hour which isn't bad.
The good news is that the shower coincides with the new moon, making everything beautiful and dark during the shower's peak for optimum viewing with the naked eye.

What time is the Geminid Meteor Shower?
The Geminid Meteor Shower occurs between December 13–16 each year. It is set to peak in Australia early Thursday morning (December 14) between 3:30am and 4:00am (AEDT).

Other information about The Geminids:
The meteors from this shower are slow moving, can be seen in December and usually peak around December 13–14, with the date of highest intensity being the morning of December 14.

The shower is thought to be intensifying every year and recent showers have seen 120–160 meteors per hour under optimal conditions, generally around 02:00 to 03:00 local time. Geminids were first observed in 1862, much more recently than other showers such as the Perseids (36 AD) and Leonids (902 AD).

Geminid Meteor Shower viewing times In Australia :

Obviously, the time to head outside depends on the state or territory you reside in. To save you the trouble of AEDT calculations, here's a complete timetable:

Follow Geminid Meteor Shower peak:
NSW              3:30am-4:00am
Victoria        3:30am-4:00am
Queensland       2:30am-3:00am
ACT                        3:30am-4:00am
South Australia     3:00am-3:30am
Western Australia              12:30am-1:00am
Tasmania                                 3:30am-4:00am
Northern Territory              1:30am-2:00am

This year's event is expected to produce up to 41 meteorites per hour, though this number drops to about 14 depending on where you live. Basically, the farther north you are in Australia, the more you see.

Sea lice attacked an Australian teen in Melbourne - LP 177

August 7, 2017.
Australia hot news.
Sea lice attacked an Australian teen in Melbourne.

An Australian teen was attacked on foot at Australian beaches by creatures suspected of being Sea lice. Sam Kanizay, 16, of Melbourne, came to the beach on Saturday to soak his legs after a soccer game .

His father quickly took him to a nearby hospital and reported that there were hundreds of small bites in size on the boy's legs and ankles.

Michael Keough is a marine biologist of the University of Melbourne, who said that if it is sea lice, then it is a pretty dramatic example of it.

In addition, marine experts suggest that parasitic sea lice may be to blame.

More info about Sea lice:
The sea louse (plural sea lice) is a family of copepods within the order Siphonostomatoida, the Caligidae. Sea lice are marine ectoparasites (external parasites) that feed on the mucus, epidermal tissue, and blood of host marine fish.

Many sea louse species are specific with regard to host genera, for example L. salmonis which has high specificity for salmonids, including the widely farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Lepeophtheirus salmonis can parasitize other salmonids to varying degrees, including brown trout (sea trout: Salmo trutta), Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), and all species of Pacific salmon.
Sea lice have both free swimming (planktonic) and parasitic life stages. All stages are separated by moults. The development rate for L. salmonis from egg to adult varies from 17 to 72 days depending on temperature.

Sea lice cause physical and enzymatic damage at their sites of attachment and feeding which results in abrasion-like lesions that vary in their nature and severity depending upon a number of factors.

These include host species, age and general health of the fish. It is not clear whether stressed fish are particularly prone to infestation. Sea lice infection causes a generalized chronic stress response in fish since feeding and attachment cause changes in the mucus consistency and damage the epithelium resulting in loss of blood and fluids, electrolyte changes, and cortisol release.
